How To Transition Songs On Spotify: Make Seamless Playlists

As far as music apps go, Spotify is tough to beat - although the way it transitions between songs is far from perfect.

The default settings don't offer any kind of transition or fade - one song ends, you wait a second, then the next song starts. This can create a bit of a jarring experience in some situations.

If you don't mind fiddling around in the settings, you can activate Spotify's crossfade feature which can create slightly smoother transitions, albeit a little bit clunky still given the lack of beatmatching or harmonic mixing.

If you want to create perfectly seamless transitions from track to track (and edit them in more detail, DJ.Studio is the best way to go. It's by far the best option for making seamless Spotify mixes with minimal effort.

Regardless of which option you're considering, this guide explains all and will help you to activate the Spotify crossfade option in a few moments, and start DJing with Spotify.

How To Enable Crossfade in the Spotify App#

Enabling crossfade in the Spotify app (mobile or desktop) is easy - just follow the steps below.

There are two main options to choose from - crossfade, and automix.

Crossfade - This will apply a volume crossfade at the end of one song and the start of the next, creating gapless playback with a semi-seamless transition. This can help make a Spotify playlist sound like a rough DJ mix.

Automix - This is a special mode that is limited to exclusive pre-selected Spotify playlists (not your own custom creations). It will trim out intros and outros and can do some basic beatmatching depending on how the playlist was set up. For example, you can use this to make a soundtrack mix seamless, if the publisher has posted an auto-mixed variation. (This isn't available on Spotify Connect).

Pacemaker used to be a popular app for making seamless transitions in Spotify. Although it's now been deactivated - check out our guide on the Best Pacemaker App Alternative!

Activate Crossfade Transitions in Spotify Mobile & Tablet#

To enable crossfade transitions in the Spotify Mobile or Tablet App:

  1. Open the Spotify mobile app on your phone/tablet.

  3. Select Settings and Privacy, or touch the gear icon.

  4. Scroll down until you see the Playback section.

  5. Look for the crossfade settings, and adjust the crossfade duration to the desired overlap length.

If you want to enable the automix option, you will find it in the same settings section.

Jan 2025 Update - Notice Regarding YouTube Mixing in DJ.Studio #

We received a warning from a major record label that our YouTube video streaming implementation didn’t align with YouTube’s intended use and violated their rights.

Unfortunately we had to remove the YouTube mixing feature immediately to continue operations.

You can still create DJ mixes and mashups with your locally stored music or through integrated platforms like Beatport and Beatsource streaming services.

We’re actively exploring alternative music sources to integrate into DJ.Studio, including partnerships with SoundCloud Go+, Tidal, Amazon Music, Apple Music, and more.

Our goal is to provide you with a vast catalog of music. Thanks for your understanding and support.

Experience Better Transitions With DJ.Studio#

Sure, the Spotify crossfades might be more seamless than waiting for a gap, but they hardly create smooth transitions - you'll get a lot of clashing keys and out-of-time beats. While the auto-mixed playlists do a better job (thanks to the beatmatching) these are also very limited, and you can't use the Spotify automix with your own playlists.

This is where DJ.Studio comes in!

DJ.Studio is a new piece of 'DJ' software (although it's not explicitly for DJs - it's great for humble music lovers too, and is the Best DJ Software for Beginners). It lets you create seamless, beat-matched mixes just with a few button clicks. You'll be excited to hear that it also works with Spotify, YouTube, and other streaming platforms.

The way it works is really easy, and it's the perfect tool for creating a seamless listening experience.

To make a flawless mix using your Spotify playlists in DJ.Studio:

  1. Open DJ.Studio
Launch DJ.Studio to begin your mixing session.

  2. Create a New Mix

(Note: You’ll need an activated Beatport Streaming account to use this feature. DJ.Studio offers a 60-day trial if you’re not yet subscribed.)

  4. Automix
Use the Automix algorithm to instantly beat-match and harmonically mix your tracks. Within seconds, DJ.Studio will create smooth transitions between tracks, giving you a solid starting point for your mix.

  5. Edit and Refine
Fine-tune your mix with the timeline editor. Adjust transitions, reorder tracks, and add effects or samples to make the mix truly your own.

  6. Legalize and Export
Once you’re satisfied with your mix, use the Legalize & Export feature to purchase any missing tracks. After downloading them, you can export your finalized mix.

Done!
