How To DJ Online - The Best Online DJ Mixer

While a proper DJ setup will usually give you better results, I'm no stranger when it comes to using a web-based DJ app to mix music online. 

I've had many experiences where I've found myself being called to give an impromptu DJ set, but I didn't have my DJ gear on me. 

In the old days, I would use a bootleg technique of having two separate YouTube tabs open, and trying to time the start and stop, and rapidly crossfading the volume using a mouse - it didn't sound great, but it got the job done. 

Since these old days, I've now discovered countless online DJ mixing apps, letting me create better sounding mixes when I'm caught without my decks. 

In this guide, I'm going to share my favorite online DJ mixing tools with you, explain how you can use them to create mixes and explain some of the pros and cons of using online DJ mixing tools.

The Benefits and Downsides of DJ Mixing Online#

For starters, I'll share some thoughts of the pros and cons of mixing online. Of course, I think you can always achieve better results with some real DJ software, installed on your machine - but sometimes we don't have access to it...

Benefits#

• Accessibility and Portability - You don't need to carry around (or own) any DJ gear to use these online tools. You just need the internet and a PC/phone. 

• Spontaneity - Sometimes, the best tool for the job is the one you have on you. If you're caught at a party getting asked to DJ at short notice, an online DJ tools is instantly ready to be used. 

• Cost-Effective - Many online DJ tools are free or have a low cost compared to professional DJ software, making it a budget-friendly option.

• Ease of Use - These tools often come with user-friendly interfaces, making them accessible even for beginners with minimal experience.

Downsides#

• Limited Features - Online DJ tools often lack the advanced features and customizability found in professional software, potentially limiting creativity and functionality.

• Dependence on Internet Connection - You need a stable internet connection to use online tools, which can be a drawback in locations with poor connectivity.

• Performance Issues - Online tools may suffer from latency and performance issues, especially on lower-end devices or with high-demand tasks.

• Quality and Reliability - I'd say the sound quality and reliability of online DJ tools generally don't match that of dedicated software, impacting the overall experience and output. But this isn't always the case. 

Jan 2025 Update - Notice Regarding YouTube Mixing in DJ.Studio​ #

We received a warning from a major record label that our YouTube video streaming implementation didn’t align with YouTube’s intended use and violated their rights.

Unfortunately we had to remove the YouTube mixing feature immediately to continue operations.

You can still create DJ mixes and mashups with your locally stored music or through integrated platforms like Beatport and Beatsource streaming services.

We’re actively exploring alternative music sources to integrate into DJ.Studio, including partnerships with SoundCloud Go+, Tidal, Amazon Music, Apple Music, and more.

How to DJ Online with DJ.Studio #

I'll show you some of my other favorite online DJ tools later, but first, I'll explain how to use DJ.Studio - which is easily the most powerful and fully featured option. 

For starters, DJ.Studio doesn't work like other DJ software - rather than using a mixer and deck-style interface, it uses a timeline and carousel editor. This makes it much easier to use when you don't have access to a DJ controller (which you probably don't if you're looking for online DJing software). 

This has several benefits, including making it really easy to create seamless mixes using a keyboard and mouse alone. DJ.Studio is suitable for both beginner and professional DJs, thanks to the simplicity, but also depth. 

Let me explain how you can use DJ.Studio to mix online. 

DJ.Studio simplifies the process of creating professional-quality mixes with tracks from Spotify. Here’s how to get started:

1. Launch DJ.Studio
   Open the app to begin your mix creation journey.

2. Start a New Mix
   Begin by setting up a new mix project.

3. Import Tracks from Spotify
   In the Add Tracks section, choose Spotify as your source and paste the link to your playlist.
   (Keep in mind that this workflow requires an active Beatport Streaming account, and DJ.Studio offers a 60-day free trial to get you started.)

4. Use Automix for a Base
   Take advantage of the Automix feature to instantly beat-match and harmonically align your tracks. This powerful algorithm creates smooth, cohesive transitions, giving you a solid framework to refine further.

5. Enhance Transitions and Add Effects
   Step into the transitions and effects editor to elevate your mix. Experiment with various transition types to ensure each track flows seamlessly into the next—whether you prefer gradual fades, energetic cuts, or rhythmic glitches. Apply creative effects like filters, delays, or equalizers to emphasize moments and bring dynamic energy to your mix. These tools let you craft a more personalized and professional sound.

6. Fine-Tune Your Mix
   Use the timeline editor to perfect your mix. Here, you can reorder tracks, tweak transitions, and incorporate samples or other elements to make your mix uniquely yours.

7. Purchase and Export
   When your mix is complete, use the Legalize & Export option to acquire any tracks you don’t already own. Once purchased and downloaded, you’ll be ready to export your polished mix.

This just shows you the basic process of using DJ.Studio to make mixes online with it's intuitive interface.

Other Online DJ Platforms#

While DJ.Studio is definitely my favorite online DJ mixer, there are still some other useful options. Because DJ.Studio uses a timeline editor, you might also want something that has more of a traditional interface.  

• Beatport DJ - This pro-grade solution lets you mix any songs from the Beatport catalog. While you do need to pay a subscription to access full-length songs, you can play 2-minute previews for the entire library. The party mode is cool too. 

  

• YouDJ - This free online DJ mixer has a very familiar deck-style interface and connects with streaming platforms. It even features realistic vinyl scratching, but it is a bit buggy, being made by a solo programmer. 

  

• Transitions DJ - This is another traditional-styled online DJ mixing app, that can connect with Soundcloud, or use downloaded files. It has some neat features, but I find it a bit ugly looking.
